Mid-life Failings

candle dark room

by Edward Lee

Another stranger
in my bed,
though I seem
to have slept
on the floor
amongst the used promises
and empty wishes;

even my blackouts
are getting tired, disintegrating,
as I get too old
for this life
I’m barely surviving,
let alone living,
my broken body reshaping itself
to the contours
of ruthless gravity
and endless excess.
