To: Mom. Love, Soon

By Soon Jones

If someone promised me
they’d bring you back for one hour
in exchange for a thousand souls,
I’d start making lists.

I almost chased you
into whatever comes next.
I almost wish they’d fucked up
my anesthesia during surgery.

Mom, I saw baby bluejays
on fresh spring grass,
and their mother divebombed me
with a warcry.

I ran,
laughing.
