Sage Cigarettes Magazine restructure

Sage Cigarettes Magazine restructure

As a platform, Sage Cigarettes Magazine has always been willing to try different schedules and structures to best accommodate our staff, writers, & readers. In June 2022, we restructured into a daily hybrid arts & literary magazine with a staff of editors responsible for the selection and preparation of their department’s weekly picks. In August 2023, we shifted again, bringing on a new fiction editor & creating a managing editor position so we had someone to coordinate & fill-in for any department that had a hiatus or vacancy.

While the structure worked for a time, we have had some major changes in our masthead & have decided to return to our original structure of quarterly literary issues. Submitted works will be organized by themed quarterly issue calls, however the magazine will remain a hybrid publication with weekly blog content generated by columnists, reviewers, & editors.

What this means practically is that we are going to re-open our application for columnists, create a new system for artists & writers to request interviews with staff, & continue reading book & music review submissions on a rolling basis. But everything else will close in favor of quarterly reading periods as of Feb. 2, 2024 (some departments may close earlier depending on when their calendars are full). The magazine will continue to publish submitted works through Feb. 9, & will feature a week of work by our editors Feb. 12-16.

After completing our current publication schedule, we will then go dark until April while we work on restructuring the back-end of our operations. Some submissions may remain open or open for the first time, but most departments will go on off-line & daily publication will cease until April 1, 2024.

So, if you have work you want us to consider for publication in the interim, get it over the the correct editor before their calendars are full. You can check our submissions pages for the current status & email address of each department.

We will be announcing the theme of our relaunch issue call & additional details about its timeline on Feb. 16.

Our editors want to extend a big thank you to everyone who reads, shares, & submits work to this platform. We are a volunteer-run, independent literary magazine & we strive to create an inclusive & safe press for writing & art by marginalized & outsider creators & we take it all seriously & want to do the best job we possibly can for our writers & audience. So, thank you for working with us as we make this transition, we are excited to see what we can create in the future!
