This bird has flown

By Kelsey Lister

this bird has flown
a fumbling feathered nestling
with unstable footing
and a will to leave
didn’t I ask to be pushed?
the flurry took my wings
twisted them into knots
I fell like a stone
unobserved in the shade
a late bloomer
with an optimistic spark
cloaked in autumn’s remnants
small steps forward
fastened by gravity
bound to the belly of the sky
