An Unfair Way to Remember

An Unfair Way to Remember

By Andrew Korizno

Let’s not despair over something lost.
Instead–let’s rationalize it
into oblivion.

Let’s claim that love is nothing more
than errant gravity–
and shows that same indifference
to us.
Let’s carve it to pieces
on either side
of a tangled formula.
I’ll write down every sensation
ever felt for the other
and bind them
to some antiseptic word
in the back of a medical appendix.
You could take a tally
of every last kiss exchanged
decibel whispered
and pound of flesh cut
as a debit or credit–
a line
on a ledger.

Let’s not despair over what we lost
but instead–let’s remember it
like that.
