In my family the women used to make quilts
and pass them down to their daughters.
Now, I can stitch and darn a bit
mend a button or hem,
but nothing as complicated as a quilt.
My partner and I share
a machine-made, down comforter,
stuffed with imitation feathers
and it seems as good
as a time-honored relic.
Already, so much history for something brand new.
I’ll have my lover sew me into the future,
her hands marrying my threads together.
