Peace: An Interview and Poem on War

Interview by Alemseged Sisay, Poem by Binod Dawadi

Poetry Education Nepal: Will you tell us about your background?

Dawadi: My name is Binod Dawadi. My birth place is Purano Naikap 13, Kathmandu, Nepal. My nationality is Nepali. My childhood was passed happily. We were middle class family. But also my parents made me capable from their hard works. My school is near my home. I enjoyed very much in reading and writing from childhood. In college and in University I read literature and literature makes me writer. I enjoyed very much by reading the various genres of literature. My career is to become a successful writer like as William Shakespeare or T.S Eliot. I don’t pass my leisure time by doing nothing. I am always engaged in reading and writing. I want to create a history from writing and from my art. I also want to write about experiences with different kinds of work, like as a teacher, waiter, shopkeeper, or factory worker, marketing works etc.

PEN: When did you write your first poem or piece of poetry? What drove you to write? And did you know at that time about poetry writing techniques example making rhyme, using poetic devices, choosing poetry styles?

Dawadi: I wrote my first poem about 3 years ago. It’s theme is spiritual love. I wrote it because I found there is no spiritual love found in this world. The world has become materialistic. Here is only fake love. All are selfish so to give knowledge about spiritual love for the people seems necessary. Yes, I knew at that time a few things about poetry writing techniques, like using rhyme, using poetic devices and choosing poetry styles. However, at that time my focus was only on the subject, but later I began to focus on such things.

PEN: Nowadays in some countries there has been war taken many life of innocents, for instance the war between Ukraine and Russia, Ethiopia’s inner war, and the conflict in Gaza. What is your opinion for this world’s problem as a poet, and what do you feel you need to say to readers?

Dawadi: I can say only one thing. Stop the wars. You can get nothing from war, war only destroys other people’s life. People’s valuable time is wasted in the war. If people can utilize their time in reading and writing then they can create history they can be immortal, rather than immortalized in war. Life comes at one time. So we should live in peace and harmony.

PEN: Have you written any poems about world peace in relation to war?

Dawadi: Yes I have written many poems on the theme of world peace and harmony:

Peace

Stop the war live in peace.

Love each other.

Celebrate unity in diversity.

Love all religion and cultures.

You can choose between two,

either you take peace or war,

it is in your hand.

War is nothing only creating devils,

become as God and live,

who has only good qualities,

to give love, care and help,

to serve the people.

Live in peace and harmony.

Stop the useless wars.
