The Bell Jar

The Bell Jar

By Angel Rosen

I promised to die this year
because everything else is dying.
I thought I’d just pack a bag
and head into death,
its familiar shape
wrapping around me
without lid or seal,
my “no, thanks” ignored,
pleading at my utmost against
an embrace that tightens
and squeezes until it makes an honest
dissolution of my life.

Entrapped still, I guess I will live now
because everything else was dying
but don’t ask me to explain why.
